Franciscan history about the Beatification of the Georgia Martyrs in Savannah to be celebrated by Cardinal Francis Leo of Montreal
Darien, Georgia: Monument to the Five Venerable Georgia Franciscan Friars published in the National Catholic Register by Kate QuiƱones/EWTN News English. Five Spanish Franciscan friars collectively known as the “Georgia Martyrs” will be beatified in Savannah, Georgia, on October 31, according to a recent Vatican announcement. He was elevated to the College of Cardinals by Pope Francis on December 7, 2024, holding the title of Cardinal-Priest of Santa Maria della Salute a Primavalle. He is a respected academic who speaks English, French, Italian, and Spanish, Archbishop Leo has taught philosophy and theology and served as a Judge for the Canadian Appeal Tribunal. He is the president and founding member of the Canadian Mariological Society. He is a Knight of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem as well as a member of the Priestly Fraternity of St. Dominic.
